Joe Janus is upholding a family tradition that dates back many generations to the days when the Janus family lived in Holland.

Joe’s grandfather owned the bakery you can see pictured on the right, and the boy in the front of the photo is Joe’s father, Joe senior.

Joe senior – an award winning pastry cook in his native Holland – moved to New Zealand in the 1950s and introduced a fine European tradition of baking to New Zealand.

In the late 50s, Joe senior established Janus Bakery in Marton, with the Janus name quickly becoming synonomous with qualty fresh bread throughout the lower half of the North Island. Janus introduced many innovations into the local market, including in the 1960s when the bakery was the first in the country to produce sliced, wrapped bread for the New Zealand market.

As larger companies like Tip Top came into the bread making industry, Janus diversified into other areas of baking.

Joe Janus has now taken the Janus tradition and moved it into the 21st century. The combination of traditional bakery together with a modern style cafe, reflects the belief that in borrowing from the old to create something new you can create something special.

Come and enjoy the special experience that is Janus Bakkerij!

A little bit about us

Newtown, Wellington is one of the most culturally diverse suburbs in New Zealand, creating a melting pot of bohemian style & eclectic culture.

Since we opened in 2008, Baobab has grown to twice the original size and created one of the largest outdoor dining spaces in Wellington. It has become a favourite local hub for the community, a place to relax & forget about how busy the outside world can be, while sipping on a premium blend of Ethiopian espresso or a pint of local boutique craft beer in our tranquil courtyard.

Baobab is open 7 days per week serving all day breakfast & lunch. Our seasonal menus are created with love by qualified chefs with locally sourced products. Our wholesome & unique cabinet treats are baked fresh every day; including gluten-free, dairy free & vegan options.

We are also open Friday evenings with live music, serving delicious tapas & after work drinks.

Quality over Quantity

For this reason Baobab had connected with some of Wellington’s best suppliers to bring you top quality products:

  • Coffee Supreme – The Origin is a premium espresso blend sourced from Ethiopia by Supreme’s roasters
  • Island Bay Butchery – free range meats, award winning handmade sausages
  • Zany Zeus – organic milk, handcrafted cheeses

THE BURGERFUEL MISSION

TO PROVIDE THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE IN GOURMET BURGERS, INCORPORATING DELICIOUS, FRESH, NATURAL INGREDIENTS, IN AN ATMOSPHERE AS CHARGED AS THE FOOD.

DEATH BEFORE BAD BURGERS.

Because we believe that life is too short to eat bad burgers, we cook’ em and prepare’ em while you wait, to bring you a healthy, built fresh alternative in gourmet fast food. We’ve cooked and eaten a whole lot of burgers in our time to get them to taste as good as they do, but that’s ok with us, our stores are our temples and burgers are our religion.

We’re continually looking for the freshest, healthiest, most wholesome ingredients, free from artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, additives and GE modifications. That’s why we use 100% pure grass fed beef and hormone free chicken. We also offer gluten free, vegetarian, vegan and halal options on our menu, as well as monthly burger specials using different and unusual ingredients to provide variety and adventure to the world’s burger connoisseurs. It’s the BurgerFuel way.

While it’s mostly about the burgers, we’re into some other stuff too. Like saving the planet. That’s why we run an ongoing ‘enviro-mental’ and sustainability campaign – a lot of tree hugging has gone in to the design of our chip cups, doofers and burger bags.

We’re also into anything loud, fast or both, which is why we have a collection of fully customised classic cars in the garage… and speaking of fast and loud, we throw one hell of a party too. But it always comes back to one thing here at BurgerFuel.

Pranah aims to restore a natural vital harmony with wholesome non-processed vegetarian food. What and where we eat influences to a large degree how we feel and indirectly how we think and act. with the right food and a conducive eating environment our natural vital harmony may be maintained and our mind left free for greater endeavours.

As the worlds demand for coffee grows so too does the need to supply. In today’s economic system however, this can unfortunately mean unnatural growing conditions and exploitation of third world growers to maximise private profit. We here at Pranah are doing what we can by supplying locally roasted Fairtrade Coffee, ensuring everybody gets a better deal.

Through sustainable practices such as reducing, reusing, recycling, composting and monitoring energy efficiency, Pranah lessens the environmental footprint on its mission.
